LAKESIDE UNION SCHOOL DISTRICT PASSES RESOLUTION TO MAKE CIVIC LEARNING OPPORTUNITIES FOR STUDENTS AT THE FOREFRONT OF EDUCATION

Lakeside Union School District understands how important it is to prepare students for college, career, and civic life. Schools are often called upon as a tool to prepare students for a lifetime of knowledgeable, engaged, and active citizenship in their communities and country. In response to this, at the Lakeside Union School District Board of Trustees September 12, 2019 board meeting, they passed and adopted a plan to implement curriculum from the National Council for Social Studies to ensure students are receiving the proper development of civic knowledge, skills, and values needed to effectively contribute to and participate in the democracy of the United States.

The resolution (#2020-02), that passed on September 12, emphasizes the District’s goal to implement civic learning into daily life for students and states, “There has never been a better or more crucial time to revitalize civic learning in our schools. The education system has a major role in ensuring students have equitable access to learning to participate in our democracy. Revitalizing civic learning opportunities can contribute to meeting these goals.” The framework which will be implemented encourages students to think critically, collaborate, develop research skills, assess and synthesize information, and present coherent arguments based on data and plays on the Lakeside Student Profile competencies.

The National Council for Social Studies framework will be used in Lakeside’s new efforts and revolves around six areas of proven practice for civic learning: classroom instruction in government, history, geography, law, democracy and economics; discussion of current events and controversial issues; service learning experiences; extracurricular activities; student participation in school governance; and simulations of democratic processes.

Currently, the district provides opportunities for students to be part of student government through Associated Student Bodies (ASB) where students run for officer positions and have a voice in student government. Beyond ASB, the Superintendent of Lakeside Union School District and other leaders in the district are working hard towards implementing the National Council for Social Studies Framework and other civic learning opportunities for Lakeside students. The district and Governing Board of LUSD plan to lead by example in civic duties and responsibilities to ensure issues are addressed appropriately and thoroughly to carry out the vision of the District.
