The pandemic of 2020 has changed our lives in ways we could not have imagined only a few short months ago. Tens of millions have lost their jobs and even more have been forced to stay at home. Finances are tight for many and it seems like boredom is at an all-time high as we all adjust to these new circumstances. One of the activities that has seen a variety of changes is consumer habits regarding pay television services.

Consumers have been shedding satellite and cable TV subscriptions at a historic pace. The hardest hit has been satellite TV as companies such as DISH Network have reported a first quarter loss of 413,000 pay-tv subscribers. 

This is coming on the heels of an awful 2019 where the biggest pay-TV providers lost more than 4.9 million customers overall. This is the largest single-year decline in cable TV history according to Leichtman Research Group.

However, not all consumers are looking to completely ditch their viewing habits as David explains, “Binge-watching is still wildly popular as we have seen with Netflix’s viral documentary Tiger King: Murder, Mayhem and Madness. People still want to consume video media but they want to do it at a less expensive cost and on their own terms.”

As consumers shift their consumption habits many are surprised to learn that there are many different alternatives.  For some, this variety can be a little confusing as each streaming service is vastly different than the next. Cord Cutting Reviews has recently released its latest version of its cord cutting guide of streaming TV service reviews and steaming TV device reviews which helps consumers navigate the ever changing landscape for 2020.

Industry estimates show that the most popular live television services during the first part of the year have been Hulu with Live TV which has netted 100,000 new subscribers and YouTube TV which netted 300,000. The new kid on the block Disney+ reported that by the end of March subscribers increased to 33.5 million. Disney also reported that Hulu’s on-demand service has 32.1 million total subscribers, up 27% from last year. ESPN+ grew to 7.9 million subscribers.
